Hank O'Day is shown here in his umpire's role, a line of work he moved into after a playing career as a pitcher in the 1880s. The date given for this glass negative is 1911, a year when O'Day was a well-known National League umpire. He is remembered for his part in the 1908 game decided by "Merkle's Boner," which made him one of the central figures in one of baseball's most argued rulings. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied newspapers, made this image, and its small glass negatives capture the everyday look of the game in the early twentieth century.
