The Bain News Service record identifies this second baseman as Mullin of Toronto, while the title spells the name Mullen, and the two versions are left side by side in the catalog. The glass negative is dated 1911, a time when Bain's New York agency supplied newspapers with photographs of ballplayers, and a single plate could appear in many papers within a day. Portraits like this one, with the player posed and facing the camera, were a staple of early sports coverage.
