Patsy Donovan, shown here as manager of the Boston club in the American League, was an Irish-born outfielder whose playing career ran through the 1890s before he moved into managing. The portrait comes from the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency whose staff supplied newspapers and magazines with pictures of athletes, politicians and celebrities in the early 1900s. The date of about 1911 is an estimate, drawn from later research by the Society for American Baseball Research's Pictorial History Committee rather than from a date written on the negative. Because Bain's glass plates were often captioned loosely, the record's identification and date are worth checking against other sources.
