Players waiting on the sideline at the Carlisle polo grounds show a part of a game that photographs rarely captured: the reserves who went in when starters needed relief. The record gives only the title, so the team is not named with certainty, but "Carlisle" most likely refers to the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania, whose football squad was one of the best-known college teams of the era and played on grounds near the campus. The 1909 date falls in a period when football was rough and new rules were being debated, and the school's program drew wide attention for its results. The Bain News Service, which made the negative, was a commercial photo agency that supplied newspapers with pictures of current events.
