Few crossings on the U.S.-Mexico border carried more traffic than the International Bridge, which spans the Rio Grande between El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. The record dates the negative to 1909, a year when the border cities drew national attention, as President William Howard Taft and Mexican President Porfirio Díaz met nearby that October. The title comes from Bain News Service caption data that has not been independently verified. Based in New York, the Bain agency sold news pictures like this one to newspapers, so the image offers a glimpse of a busy commercial link in the late Díaz era.
