The barricade in this Juárez view was a federal position taken by insurrectos, the revolutionary forces loyal to Francisco I. Madero, during the fighting along the Texas border in May 1911. Ciudad Juárez, directly across the Rio Grande from El Paso, was a major border city, and its fall helped push Porfirio Díaz to resign later that month. Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, distributed pictures like this to newspapers eager for images of the conflict next door. The record gives no date, and its title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact moment shown is uncertain.
