The sitter is recorded only as W.J. Stone, and that title comes from data the Bain News Service wrote on the negative or its caption card, which has not been independently verified. The plate is a glass negative of 5 by 7 inches or smaller, a format common in the Bain files, which hold news pictures and portraits sent to newspapers in the early 1900s. George Grantham Bain founded the service in New York around 1899, and its collection documents politicians, performers and events of the period. With no date recorded, the picture is best read through the studio's working methods rather than a specific occasion.
