The caption on this glass negative describes a cavalry patrol of insurrectos, the term American forces used for Filipino fighters who resisted U.S. rule after the Spanish-American War. The Philippine-American War ran from 1899 to 1902 and continued in smaller engagements for years afterward, and mounted patrols covered the rough country where guerrilla bands moved. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption information the Bain News Service wrote on its own cards, so the location and the riders' identities remain unconfirmed. Bain's agency distributed news pictures from the early 1900s onward, which makes this plate a useful look at how the conflict was pictured for American audiences.
