John D. Rockefeller and his wife, Laura Spelman Rockefeller, appear here in a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the body of work assembled by the Bain News Service, a Manhattan picture agency that sold news photographs to newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century. The record's title comes from caption information the agency wrote on the negatives or cards, which the Library of Congress notes has not been independently verified, so the identification is best taken as the agency's own. Rockefeller, the oil magnate who founded Standard Oil, was among the most photographed businessmen of his era, and the Bain files preserve how the press framed such figures for a public eager to see them.
