The caption on this glass negative names James A. Farrell with his wife and daughter, but the Bain News Service recorded its titles without verifying them, so the identification rests on the caption alone. If it refers to the New York industrialist who led United States Steel from 1911 to 1932, the portrait would come from that company's peak years. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, made thousands of glass negatives in the early twentieth century, often for newspapers that needed quick portraits of prominent people and their families. Such images show how business leaders presented their households to the public at the time.
