The focus here is a group of girls at a farm run by Mrs. O.H.P. Belmont, the philanthropist and women's suffrage advocate better known as Alva Belmont. Training young women in agricultural work was an unusual undertaking for the period, when farming was widely seen as men's labor, and the picture offers a glimpse of that effort. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a commercial press agency that supplied news pictures to newspapers. The record gives no firm date, and the title comes from caption information the agency recorded at the time, so the exact setting and year are best treated as provisional.
