Few pictures in the Bain collection show the aftermath of the Austin Dam failure as directly as this view of a railroad bridge at Costello in Potter County, Pennsylvania. The record gives no date, but the title ties it to the March 1900 flood, when a dam holding back a millpond above the borough of Austin gave way after heavy rain and sent a wall of water down the valley. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers, often issued scenes of such disasters, but its caption information was sometimes unverified, so the title should be read as provisional.
