The record gives this picture the title "Washington Irving House," but the title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact building is not confirmed. The most likely subject is Sunnyside, the Hudson River cottage near Tarrytown, New York, that Irving remodeled in the 1830s and where he lived until his death in 1859. The image survives as a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Its undated record leaves the taking date unknown, but the negative's format and source point to that period.
