The house in this picture is tied to John Paul Jones, the Scottish-born officer who became one of the best-known naval commanders of the American Revolution. Local tradition links the building to his years as a young sailor trading on the Rappahannock River, though the record's title comes from caption data that the Bain News Service supplied and that has not been independently verified. The Bain collection holds some 40,000 negatives from the agency's work in the early twentieth century, when it sold news and feature photographs to newspapers across the country. Its glass plates record how many older American buildings were being documented and promoted as historic sites during that period.
