Hillsville, Virginia, is the seat of Carroll County, and this view shows its courthouse, the building at the center of a violent event in March 1912. During a trial that day, members of the Allen family, who were defendants, opened fire inside the courthouse, killing the presiding judge, the prosecutor, and others. The record gives no date for this negative, so it may or may not come from that year. Bain News Service, the New York agency that made it, sent pictures like this one to newspapers, which is why many of its views of courthouses and small towns became familiar news images.
