Chicago's children's art classes are the particular focus of this 1936 silkscreen poster, which the Federal Art Project issued to publicize free art instruction for young people in the city. The WPA's poster division used silkscreen because it allowed inexpensive runs of bold, flat-colored images that could be pasted on storefronts, schools and public buildings. Federal art programs of the Depression years paired public education with jobs for out-of-work artists, and posters like this one show how that mission reached ordinary neighborhoods. The artist's name, Osborn, appears in the title, and the poster's date stamp from 1940 suggests it stayed in circulation for several years.
