Florence Kelley appears in this c1925 studio portrait, one of many images the Underwood & Underwood firm produced of public figures for newspapers and magazines. Kelley spent much of her career pressing for limits on child labor, shorter working hours for women, and safer factory conditions. She served as Illinois's first chief factory inspector in the 1890s, after living at Hull House in Chicago, and went on to lead the National Consumers' League for more than three decades. The record's date comes from an old caption card and has not been verified, so the portrait's exact year remains uncertain.
