Few American women of the nineteenth century left as lasting a mark as Mary Baker Eddy, and this reproduction of a painting shows her in her mid-eighties, around 1907. She had published *Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures* in 1875 and founded the Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston in 1879, and by this time she was the recognized head of a growing religious movement. Her likeness became familiar to church members and the wider public in her later years. The painter and original location are not recorded in this entry, so the details of the source work remain uncertain.
