Wesley Livsey Jones, a Republican who represented Washington State in the U.S. Senate from 1909 until his death in 1932, is the subject of this portrait. Underwood & Underwood, the New York firm known for stereographs and mass-produced studio portraits, made the print, though the record gives no date, so it is hard to place it in Jones's long career. Jones is best remembered for the Merchant Marine Act of 1920, commonly called the Jones Act, which shaped American shipping policy for decades. A formal portrait like this one reflects how Washington politicians presented themselves to the public in the early twentieth century.
