This 1912 card is a tobacco issue, printed in color with a relief and halftone process, and its title, "Series of Champions," was supplied by Library staff rather than printed on the card. It was distributed by the Honest Long Cut and Miners Extra brands, which put such cards in packs to stiffen the packaging and encourage buyers to collect the full set. The card is part of the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection of baseball cards, and its bright color and portrait-style layout show how early twentieth-century tobacco makers used baseball imagery to market their products.
