The "Goodwin Champions" title was assigned by Library staff, so the card itself is catalogued under the number N162 from the tobacco-card series. Goodwin & Company, the New York tobacco firm behind Old Judge cigarettes, inserted these chromolithographed cards into its packs in the late 1880s to build brand loyalty among smokers. Sets like this one often mixed baseball players with champions from boxing, rowing, and other sports, which made the cards popular with collectors of every kind. Today the cards are valued as some of the earliest mass-produced American sports images, showing how advertising and popular sport grew together in the 1880s.
