This card belongs to the Goodwin Champions series, catalogued as N162, and its title was supplied by Library staff rather than printed on the card itself. Goodwin & Company, a New York tobacco firm, issued it in 1888 as a chromolithograph, a color print made from multiple stone or metal plates. Cards like this were packed with cigarettes, both to stiffen the packs and to encourage buyers to collect full sets. Today they document how sports, celebrity and commercial art overlapped in the late 1880s.
