Goodwin & Co. printed this Champions card in New York, and it belongs to a tobacco-era series that reached collectors through cigarette packs in the late 1880s. Its "list" format is what sets it apart from the single-portrait cards on this board: rather than showing one athlete, it groups sports and their champions together on one sheet. Tobacco firms packed such cards in to stiffen the packaging and to encourage repeat buying, and the series became a lasting record of the sporting world of the period, from baseball to boxing and racing. Looking at it today, you can see how the printers used small type and simple woodcut-style illustration to fit a great deal of information onto a small card.
