Allen & Ginter, a Richmond, Virginia tobacco firm, issued this second series of its World's Champions cards in the late 1880s. The set went beyond baseball to honor champions in many sports and contests, so this card reflects a moment when athletes were becoming public celebrities. Cards like this were tucked into cigarette packs, where their stiff cardboard protected the cigarettes and gave buyers a reason to collect the full run. Its place on the Boston baseball board reflects how strongly the city's teams shaped the sport's popularity in that decade.
