Piedmont Cigarettes issued this card back as part of a set of 150 subjects, a format tobacco companies used around the turn of the twentieth century to sell cigarettes and give buyers something to collect. The card's reverse was where the printed text and advertising lived, so the back of a card like this reveals as much about marketing as it does about the players on the front. Cards from this era were typically packed into cigarette packs, which helped popularize baseball among working-class men and boys who could not otherwise follow the game closely.
