The reverse of this card carries a printed list of athletes rather than the usual advertising or game rules, so its value lies as much in its names as in its images. Tobacco companies slipped cards like this into cigarette packs in the early 1900s, both to stiffen the packaging and to encourage collecting, and many series were built around sports stars of the day. Because this one is grouped under the title "The World's Champions," the back works as a snapshot of which athletes the issuer considered the top names of their time. Boston's baseball fans would have recognized many of the players on the front of such cards.
