Issued in 1888 by W.S. Kimball, the Rochester, New York tobacco firm, this card belongs to a series titled *Champions*. Kimball tucked cards like this into cigarette packages to attract buyers and encourage loyalty to its brands. It was printed as a chromolithograph, a multistep color process that let manufacturers reproduce bright uniforms and lettering far more cheaply than hand painting. Today collectors value these cards both as early baseball imagery and as examples of 1880s advertising art.
