Part of W.S. Kimball's "Champions" series, catalogued as N184, this 1888 card is a chromolithograph, a multicolor print made from several lithographic stones. Kimball, a cigarette manufacturer in Rochester, New York, tucked cards like this into its packs, both to stiffen the package and to give buyers a collectible reason to pick its brand. Cards from the 1880s were printed in bright color and often showed players in posed, idealized form, so they now record both the look of the era's advertising and the early rise of professional baseball. The card is held in the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection at the Library of Congress.
