Printed as a chromolithograph in 1888, this card was issued by Goodwin & Company, a New York tobacco firm that packed cards like it into its cigarettes to attract buyers. The Goodwin Champions series, catalogued as N162, honored sporting figures from several fields rather than baseball alone, so the card reflects how the sport shared popularity with other athletic pursuits of the period. Its color printing and early date make it a good example of the lithographic work that made tobacco cards popular collectibles in the late 1880s. It belongs to the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection of baseball cards.
