This chromolithograph is a card from the 1888 Allen & Ginter World's Champions series (N29), and its caption names a player only as "Getzin," which is the detail that sets it apart from other baseball cards on the board. Allen & Ginter, a Richmond, Virginia tobacco firm, packed cards like this into cigarette packages as a collectible inducement, and the World's Champions set honored sports champions rather than baseball players alone. The color lithography, printed in many inks, was a common method for cheap mass-produced advertising of the 1880s. Its small size and bright colors show how quickly trading cards became a popular way for American firms to reach buyers.
