Rather than one player, this card belongs to the World's Champions series (N29), which Allen & Ginter issued in 1888 to honor champions across many sports, not only baseball. The Richmond, Virginia tobacco firm placed such colorful cards in its cigarette packs, where they stiffened the packaging and encouraged buyers to collect the whole set. Printed in color by chromolithography, the cards gave 1880s Americans a vivid glimpse of athletic heroes at a time when professional baseball was growing quickly. The title reflects the series name rather than a caption printed on the card itself.
