The card belongs to Allen & Ginter's World's Champions series, catalogued as N29, a set of color chromolithographs issued in 1888. The Richmond, Virginia tobacco firm packed cards like this into its cigarettes to encourage repeat purchases, and the series covered champions from many fields of sport and contest. The baseball label was devised by Library of Congress staff, so the card is best understood as part of that wider set. Chromolithography layered several colored inks over one another, giving the image its bright, saturated finish.
