John M. Ward's place in baseball history rests partly on a perfect game he pitched for the Providence Grays against Buffalo on June 12, 1880. He was also a skilled shortstop and a Columbia-trained lawyer, a combination unusual for a ballplayer of his day. Allen & Ginter included cards like this one in its cigarette packs, which helped make collecting player portraits a popular pastime. Ward later organized the Players' League in 1890, an effort to win players better terms from club owners.
