This card was issued by the makers of Honest Long Cut and Miners Extra, two chewing tobacco brands, and the title "Series of Champions" was supplied by Library staff rather than printed on the card. Tobacco companies of the 1910s slipped cards like this into their packages, partly as stiffeners and partly to encourage buyers to collect full sets. The "T227" designation is a catalog code that collectors and researchers use for this 1912 issue. The color relief printing combined with a halftone screen let the printer reproduce a player's photograph with tonal detail, a technique that made these small cards far more lifelike than earlier hand-drawn illustrations.
