Issued in 1910 by the American Tobacco Company, this card belongs to the Contentnea First Series, named for one of the cigarette brands the company promoted. It was printed as a color relief print with halftone, a process that let printers turn out vivid images cheaply in large runs. Tobacco companies packed cards like this into cigarette packages to stiffen the paper boxes and encourage buyers to collect the full set. Today collectors study these early series as a record of professional baseball at the time. The "T209" label is a cataloging code assigned later by collectors, not a number the company printed.
