This card belongs to the Contentnea Photo Series, cataloged as T209, a set the American Tobacco Company issued in 1910 with its cigarette packs. Each card carried a small photographic portrait of a ballplayer, printed by halftone, a photomechanical process that broke a photograph into tiny dots so it could be reproduced cheaply in large runs. Tobacco companies inserted cards like this to stiffen the packs and encourage buyers to collect a full set, and the cards later became prized as records of early professional players and their appearance. The title "Baseball card" was supplied by Library staff, since the original card itself does not name its own series in that way.
