Few recruiting posters from the immediate postwar years speak to the viewer as directly as this one. Its German title, *Auch du sollst beitreten zur Reichswehr*, translates roughly as "You too should join the Reichswehr." Credited to J.U. Engelhard and printed in Munich in 1919 by the Oscar Consée lithography firm, this large color sheet, about 115 by 90 centimeters, was made for public display. The Reichswehr was the army of the new Weimar Republic, formed after the armistice and limited by the Treaty of Versailles to 100,000 men, so the poster reflects a government rebuilding its forces amid defeat and political unrest.
