A woodcut by William H. Johnson, *Refugee Child* shows a young girl as a displaced person, a subject that was pressing in the 1930s, when political upheaval uprooted large numbers of people across Europe. Johnson, an African American painter, spent much of that decade working in Scandinavia and Europe, and this print reflects his attention to the human cost of those years. The Harmon Foundation, a New York organization founded in 1922 to promote African American artists, is credited as the source. The hand coloring added to the black-and-white woodcut is worth noticing, since it sets off the child's figure against the stark lines of the printed block.
