Anita Kunz's "Tugged" is an illustration rather than a photograph, built from watercolor and gouache laid over graphite on illustration board, and its subject is the strain of juggling home and work. It was published in Working Woman magazine in October 2001, the year the magazine ran many features on the pressures of career and family life for women. The picture's subjects, listed in the Library's catalog as domestic life, employment and mental states from the 2000s, show how an editorial illustration can carry a whole social anxiety in a single figure. Kunz, a Toronto-born artist known for her bold, graphic style in magazines, gave the work to the Library of Congress in 2003, where it was later shown in an exhibition of her work.
