Fire company caps like the one this sitter wears were a point of local pride in American towns in the 1840s, when volunteer companies were often as much social clubs as firefighting crews. The "Deluge No. 6" marking names a specific company, and the cap is the detail that identifies the sitter's allegiance. Daguerreotypes from 1840 required subjects to hold still for minutes in bright light, so the stiff pose and steady gaze are a product of the process as much as of the era. The silvered copper plate also gives the image its mirror-like surface, which reverses left and right and rewards close looking.
