Aimee Semple McPherson, the Canadian-born evangelist who founded the Foursquare Church and built Angelus Temple in Los Angeles, appears in this portrait dated February 14, 1927. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio, produced it, and its glass negatives documented politicians, performers and other public figures in the early twentieth century. At the time McPherson was one of the best-known religious figures in the country, known for theatrical sermons and her early use of radio. Viewers may notice streaks and faint blemishes on the glass, which come from natural deterioration of the original coating.
