The head of the Statue of Liberty is the focus here, with the crown's seven rays and the copper folds of the face filling the frame. The statue was a gift from the people of France to the United States, designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, with the internal iron framework engineered by Gustave Eiffel's firm. It was dedicated in New York Harbor in 1886 and has since become one of the most recognized symbols of the nation. Close views like this one show how the sculptor shaped the copper sheets by hand to build the figure's expression.
