Few photographs show the Statue of Liberty before it left France, and this one captures the work in progress in Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi's Paris workshop. Workmen stand among the parts of the figure, including a large hand and a quarter-size model of the head, which were used to check proportions before enlargement. The statue was a gift from the people of France to the United States, and the workshop stage was where its copper sheets were shaped over wooden and iron frameworks. The picture is worth studying for how much of the monument was built as separate, scaled pieces.
