The head of the statue, shown here on display in a Paris park in 1883, was one of the statue's first public appearances after it left the workshop. Visitors paid to climb into it as part of a fundraising drive to finish the pedestal in New York, which was still short of money. The sculptor, Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, had designed the head as a piece in its own right, so the display let Parisians see the work at close range before the full statue was assembled and shipped across the Atlantic.
