Few hotels in New Hampshire's White Mountains were as well known as the Pemigewasset House in Plymouth, a town that served as a gateway for travelers heading into the mountains. Plymouth grew as a railroad stop in the nineteenth century, and hotels like this one catered to summer visitors who came for fresh air, hiking, and scenery. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American towns, resorts, and railroads in the early 1900s, made this view on an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative, a large format that captured fine architectural detail.
