Varennes, the Argonne town in northeastern France, sat on the rail corridor along the Meuse, and in 1919 its yards were still being repaired after four years of war. The line through the valley had carried American troops and supplies during the Meuse-Argonne offensive of autumn 1918, and the yard shown here was one of many that had to be restored before freight could move north and east again. Locals would also have known Varennes for an older event: in June 1791, Louis XVI was stopped here during his flight from Paris, an arrest that became a turning point in the French Revolution. By 1919, though, the town's prospects depended more on the railway, which had to work again before fields, villages and damaged farms could be resettled.
