A ferry crossing on Port Royal Island, South Carolina, sets this stereograph apart, and its record notes the battleground of January 1, 1862 in the distance. The Union occupation of the Port Royal region in late 1861 turned the Sea Islands into a Federal foothold, and small crossings like this one carried troops, supplies and local traffic over the tidal waterways of the area. Made as a glass stereograph by the wet collodion process, the image was issued by the War Photograph and Exhibition Company, which published war views for a public eager to see scenes from the front. Its quiet landscape, with fighting in the background, pairs everyday wartime movement with the violence nearby.
