Few places in the Civil War changed hands as often as Harpers Ferry, and this view shows the federal arsenal after its buildings were set on fire in April 1861, when Union troops withdrew rather than let Virginia forces seize the stores. The photograph was made in 1862 by David B. Woodbury, who also documented the Antietam campaign that year, a link the record notes through its subject headings. It was taken as a stereograph from a wet collodion glass negative, so it was meant to be viewed in three dimensions. The ruins also recall the town's earlier role in John Brown's 1859 raid and its strategic value to both armies.
