The Samaritan synagogue in Shechem, the town now called Nablus, stands at the heart of a small community that holds Mount Gerizim sacred and accepts only the Five Books of Moses as scripture. The Samaritans have kept their own worship and calendar apart from Jewish and Christian traditions for centuries, which made their congregation a curiosity for Western travelers. B.W. Kilburn copyrighted this 1899 view, and Carleton H. Graves issued it as a card for parlor stereoscopes. Because the title names the synagogue directly, the scene offers a rare record of worship in a community that was then little known outside the region.
