What sets this card apart is its focus on Druze dress, recorded on the slopes of Mount Hermon, a peak on the border of Lebanon and Syria. The Druze faith emerged from Ismaili Islam in Fatimid Egypt in the early eleventh century, and by the early 1900s its followers were concentrated in the mountains of Lebanon, Syria and Palestine. Issued as a stereograph card, the image was meant to be seen through a stereoscope, a popular parlor viewer that let American and European audiences see distant peoples and places in apparent three dimensions.
